Hi, and welcome to the website for pianist and composer Catherine Marie Charlton! If you're not familiar with my piano music, here's a little run-down... my first love is improvisation, and I'm inspired by all kinds of music. My original training was in classical music, and in more recent years I've studied jazz, and lately I've been pursuing classical studies again... but mostly I just play and be ME, and express my emotions through the keyboard.
Live, I perform solo piano and as a duo with J. Jody Janetta on drums. As a soloist, I perform originals, mixed with classical music and compositions by some of my favorite pianists. (a recent concert program at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA, included music by Chopin, George Winston, Keith Jarrett, and Chick Corea). As a duo with Jody Janetta, we play my originals, free improvisations, folk tunes, jazz standards... ranging from the meditative to the avant-garde, from classical sounding to Monk-meets-Satie, to Cecil Taylor-meets-Debussy (those are descriptions from fans...). We are inspired greatly by the music on the European record label ECM. Some of my musical heroes include Keith Jarrett, David Darling, Bobby McFerrin, and Bruce Hornsby (his new Camp Meeting album especially...).
My piano recordings to-date have leaned towards the relaxation genre and people tell me they de-stress and rejuvenate to the music.
